Description

This is an early 16th-century hall house, originally floored in the late 16th century and altered in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed with roughcast and colourwashed render, and has a roof of black-glazed pantiles. It is two storeys high with a two-window front. A 18th-century four-panelled door is located on the left, in the position of what was formerly the screens passage door, and has an overlight. A 20th-century casement window is to the right. A canted corner on the south-west side features a half-glazed 20th-century door flanked by single 19th-century shop display windows with glazing bars. Two 20th-century two-light casements are on the first floor. The gabled roof has a ridge stack on the left. A late 18th-century two-storey rear wing has two-light metal casements and an external stack. The interior includes a mid-16th-century stack inserted into the former screens passage to form a lobby-entrance plan. The frame consists of heavy timbers with jowled principal posts. A former rear wall exhibits arched bracing from the centre post to the middle rail, and contains a blocked two-light, hollow-moulded mullioned window. The front wall has two blocked square-mullioned windows. There is a rebuilt brick fireplace, with the stack cut through in the 18th century to reinstate the passage. The rafter roof was replaced in the late 18th century.
