Description
The Midland Bank is a bank building constructed around 1920, located on Castle Street in Eye. It features a brick facade faced with sandstone and has a slate roof, designed in a classical style. The building is single storey and occupies a corner site, showcasing an arched and moulded entrance door at the splayed corner, with jambs that have palmette relief carving.
To the east, there are two bays, and to the north, there are four bays, each with arched windows that have margin glazing, framed by Roman Doric engaged columns that stand on a continuous plinth. The building is adorned with a plain architrave, a mutulated cornice, and a parapet balustrade. Above the doorway is a centerpiece in the form of a blank panel, framed with carved inverted consoles that rise to a segmental capping cornice. The roof is hipped.
Inside, the banking hall retains its original timber counter, which is enhanced with eared fielded panels and scrolled consoles. The rear wall features plank dado panelling, which is separated from the counter by a timber partition screen fitted with drawers.
