Description

The Wilderness is a house, originally a farmhouse, dating to 1570. It has a timber-framed core, with portions plastered and others encased in 19th-century red brick. The roof is pantiled. The house is two storeys high and has four windows, featuring 19th-century casement windows set within cambered stuccoed arches with raised keys. A small, 20th-century gabled porch shelters the boarded front door. An internal chimney stack is present, with a later gable stack to the left. The interior has been modernised, although some original timber framing remains exposed. The parlour contains an open fireplace with a depressed brick arch, and alongside it, a small 17th-century cupboard with its original door. Two similar, smaller fireplaces are found on the first floor. A mid-20th century staircase has been inserted into part of the hall, but the original newel staircases have been retained. Part of the original house is missing at the parlour end, and the roof is a later reconstruction.
