Description
Brook Cottages is a former farmhouse that has been divided into two cottages. It has an early 16th century core with later extensions. The building is two storeys high and has a three-cell plan. It features a timber-framed structure with roughcast and a thatched roof. There is an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft, along with a later end stack. The windows include various three-light and two-light casements, some of which are old and have transoms and pintle hinges, while others are late 20th century replacements. The entrance includes a four-panel door with sunk panels beneath an open gabled latticed porch, and there is a late 20th century plank door in a gabled red brick porch that has been enclosed. Inside, there is a limited amount of exposed timbering, including one bay of very heavy joists that are set flat and unchamfered at the left end. In the central room, there is a heavy main cross-beam with wide chamfers and cut-off stops, supported by small solid braces. The right-hand cottage appears to be an addition with lighter timbering. It is said that the frame on the upper floor is covered, and the roof is not accessible.
