Description
The Thatched Cottage is a 17th-century house located in South Elmham St. James. It is 1½ storeys high, constructed with a timber frame that is rendered and topped with a thatched roof. The cottage features three 3-light late 20th-century diamond-leaded casement windows on each storey and a plank door situated beneath an open thatched and gabled porch. Inside, there is an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft and one end stack. The frame consists of six bays, including a chimney bay, and likely follows a basic three-cell layout. However, to the left of the stack, there is now a single large room, with ceiling beams that may have been added or replaced. The main posts do not have tie-beams, and some of the timbers used are reused. To the right of the stack, the main beam on the ground floor features ovolo-moulding and ogee stops, while the other beams are stop-chamfered, with plain joists set flat. Additionally, there is a single-storey lean-to at the rear.
