Description
Bush Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is timber framed and encased in mid-19th century red brick, featuring white brick dressings. The roof has double Roman tiles on the front and pantiles on the rear. The building has two storeys and an attic, designed in a three-cell, lobby entry layout.
There are three windows on the front, which are mid-19th century three-light mullion and transom casements set under cambered arches. To the left, there is a single-light window on the ground floor and a standard mid-20th century window nearby. A mid-19th century porch, which also contains the staircase, features a parapet with a central gablet, brick copings, and finials. The door is from the mid-20th century.
The chimney stack has been rebuilt in the mid-19th century and includes polygonal grouped flues with two projecting courses of white brick and star caps. Internally, only a small portion of the original structure is visible, and the ground floor plan at the service end has been altered. The partition between the hall and service chambers includes solid curved braces connecting the tie beam and wall posts. There is evidence of heavy tie beam braces over the hall chamber. The roof features a queen-post design with reverse-curved braces to the arcade plates, but there is no bracing to the collars. It is likely that the roof was originally hipped over the service end.
