Description
Denham Hall is a manor farmhouse that dates from the 16th to 17th centuries and was built in two phases, featuring a double-pile plan. It underwent significant alterations, particularly in the mid-19th century. The building is timber framed, with the facade covered in mid-19th century white brick, while the rest of the structure is roughcast-rendered. The front has a slated roof, while the other three slopes are covered in pantiles.
The house is two storeys high with an attic in the rear range. It has a symmetrical three-bay facade, with the bays separated by pilaster strips and two projecting brick courses at the first-floor level. The large casement windows likely predate the brickwork. The entrance features a 19th-century six-panel door, with the upper two panels being glazed, and is sheltered by a Regency-style open timber porch with a swept roof. All openings have splayed reveals and brick hoodmoulds, and there are gable stacks made of red brick.
The right gable end includes a doorway adorned with strapwork-enriched pilasters and an entablature, which is now enclosed by a small gabled porch. The interior has been significantly altered, likely in the 18th and 19th centuries, with no visible timbers in the front range. The rear range, dating from the mid-16th century, features a former dairy with a two-bay ceiling supported by solid arched braces (one brace is missing) and heavy plain joists. Some of the timber frame is visible in the upper rooms, and this range has a queen-post roof. The front range contains a closed-string well stair with stick balusters. The property is also surrounded by a complete encircling medieval moat.
