Description
Myrtle Cottage is a house that consists of two sections. The right section is the older part, likely dating back to medieval times, although it has been significantly altered. The left section is from the 16th century, which has been extended to the left and re-roofed in the 19th century. The building is primarily timber framed and plastered, with some small areas on the right gable end and rear that are weatherboarded. It has a pantiled roof, with two storeys on the left side and one and a half storeys on the right, which features lower eaves and a higher ridge.
The windows are mainly small-paned casements from the 19th century, except for one standard casement window from the mid-20th century on the left. There is also a gabled dormer. The left section includes a gabled porch with a boarded door. An internal stack is located at the junction of the two sections, with a smaller gable stack on the left. Much of the structure is exposed inside, particularly in the older right section, which is more intact. The left section has a middle rail, but no wall braces or early windows are visible.
The ground floor ceiling in the right section features heavy plain joists set flat, and the bridging beam shows remains of broach stop-chamfers. There is evidence of former cross-entry doorways by the gable end, indicating that the house may have originally extended further to the right. The roof over this part has clasped purlins. The upper room in the left section contains a stuccoed fireplace with a simply-moulded three-centred arch.
