Description

Gissings Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th to 17th century, built in two or possibly three phases, creating a single long range. The structure is timber framed and encased in colourwashed brick, with a date inscribed on an oval tablet on the front reading 'T.M 1794'. It features a parapet gable on the left and a roof covered with concrete pantiles. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a range of four widely spaced windows that are old three-light casements set under segmental arches.

To the left, there is a lobby entrance with a four-panel door and a gabled porch, which has open timberwork and wavy bargeboards. On the right side, there is a mid-20th century door with a bracketed lean-to hood. The internal stack has a plain shaft, while an external stack is set against the rear wall. Inside, much of the structure is covered with wallpaper. A notable feature is a 16th-century planked partition with moulded muntins that separates the hall from the cross-passage. The adjacent service cross-partition has been removed. The service cell contains plain but substantial joists and shows evidence of a ladder stair. The parlour features an ovolo bridging beam, and its roof has clasped and butt purlins with cranked wind bracing. Above the hall and service cell, there are diminished stepped butt purlins, indicating a later 17th-century re-roofing. Beyond the original service cell, the house has been extended by two bays, likely around 1700.
