Description
Upland House is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with a possible earlier core, and underwent significant remodelling in the early 19th century, likely around 1818. The building features a T-shaped layout, with a 17th-century section at the rear and an early 19th-century range added to the front. The front range is constructed of gault brick, adorned with a dentil course at the eaves and a band at the first floor. It has a hipped slated roof with internal chimneys made of gault brick. The house is two storeys high and has three windows, which are small-pane sashes with flat arches of gauged brick. The entrance door is six-panelled, with the upper four panes glazed, and is topped by a semi-circular fanlight. Above the door, there is a gauged brick arch with a keystone and a pattern of leaded stained glass, along with a leaded flat canopy.
At the rear, there is a two-cell 17th-century block consisting of a hall and parlour, made of red brick that likely encases timber framing, and features a hipped plaintiled roof, one tile of which is dated 1818. Inside, there are back-to-back lintelled open fireplaces. Behind this section is a service range that is one storey high with attics, notable for its unusually wide span. This range is timber-framed and plastered, showcasing 19th-century cable-pattern pargetting, and has a slated roof that was once thatched, along with two mid-20th-century flat-roofed dormers. The interior of the rear range has not been examined, but there is a possibility of a pre-17th-century core.
