Description
Gipping Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to 1625, as indicated on the building. It underwent remodelling in the mid-19th century. The structure has two storeys and features a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. The farmhouse is timber-framed, with the front encased in mid-19th century red brick and the rear plastered. A date of 1625 is displayed high on the rear wall in raised plasterwork. The roofs are covered with plaintiles, and it is believed they were once thatched. There is an axial chimney that has mostly been rebuilt in the 19th century, but a section of pink and buff brickwork remains visible at the rear. The windows are 19th century small-pane casements, with those on the ground floor having cambered heads. The mid-19th century entrance porch is gabled and plaintiled, featuring cusped bargeboards and a four-panelled door. Inside, some unmoulded early 17th century framing is exposed, including an ovolo-moulded binding beam. To the right of the main farmhouse is a lower service range that was added in the 18th century, which incorporates much reused timber from a medieval house. The farmhouse is also associated with a partial medieval moat.
