Description
The Old Post Office is a 17th-century house located on Norwich Road in Thwaite. It features a timber frame that is rendered and has a thatched roof, rising to one and a half storeys. The building has various types of windows, including a sash window with glazing bars on the left and a 3-light casement window in the center. To the right, there is a former shop that has a mid-20th century replacement small-paned canted bay window, accompanied by a doorway with a boarded half-door, where the cover battens form trefoil-headed panels. Above both the shop and the doorway is a projecting fascia and cornice.
To the immediate left of the former shop, there is an early 19th-century doorcase featuring a moulded architrave with small corner rosettes and a cornice with small balls attached to the soffit. The door itself has six flush panels with reeded surrounds. On the extreme left, there is a late 18th-century doorway with an eared architrave and a dentilled cornice supported by solid brackets; this door has six sunk panels. The house also has three dormers with old 3-light casement windows and an internal stack with a 19th-century shaft. At the rear, there is a continuous brick lean-to with a glazed black pantiled roof. The interior has not been examined.
