Description
The Poplars is a 17th-century house located in Roydon, featuring a timber-frame structure that is rendered, with brick end walls. The building has a steep black glazed pantile roof with gabled ends and brick coping on the west gable end. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and consists of three bays. The windows are casements with glazing bars, with one 19th-century sash window on the ground floor and modern casements. The central doorway has a reeded architrave and a glazed door. There are three 19th-century dormers and an off-centre brick chimney stack on the west end. At the rear, there is a wing that is plastered and brick-faced timber frame, likely also from the 17th century, featuring a large brick stack on the west end.
Inside, the house has chamfered beams and 17th-century panelling in the central hall, with a staircase at the rear that has a string and moulded rails but no balusters. There is a carved wooden overmantel, possibly from the 17th century or a later creation, which features depressed arches and fluted pilasters.
