Description

A barn, probably originally a stable block serving Thwaite Hall (which has since been demolished), dates to the 17th century. It is constructed of red brick with weatherboarded gables. The south wall is whitewashed where it adjoins other buildings. The roof is now covered in corrugated asbestos. A later gabled timber porch and a lean-to addition are located to the north. There are various blocked window openings on two levels. Two blocked entrances, approximately 2 metres wide and just over 2 metres high, are present on the north side, featuring incomplete projecting brick surrounds. Inside, the east end has a floorbeam with mortices that once held heavy square joists, which are now missing; the present floor in this section dates to the 19th century. A dividing wall at the end of the floored area is partially constructed of clay lumps and partially of studded and weatherboarded timber. The area beyond that is unfloored. The largely intact roof has nine bays, with two rows of butt purlins and some one-way plank wind bracing. The tie beams are not related to the roof bays. Thwaite Hall was situated within a moated enclosure immediately to the west and is believed to have been demolished in the 18th century.
