Description
No 17 on St Stephens Lane is a timber-framed and plastered building that dates back to the 16th century but has undergone significant alterations at the front. Originally built as a house, it later became the Sun Inn and is now used as shop premises. The building has two storeys, with a long range extending to the east at the rear, featuring a jettied upper storey on the south side that overlooks a small yard. The upper storey retains remnants of 17th-century pargetting, which includes a rayed sun design. The jettied range is divided into two distinct sections, with the west front displaying a two-window range with casement windows. The upper storey features sham timber-framing, while the ground storey has a 20th-century shop front. The roof is tiled. Inside, the upper storey reveals exposed heavy timber-framing, along with a 17th-century plaster ceiling adorned with floral ornamentation. The upper room has a ceiling positioned above the tie-beam level, and the roof features plain crown posts that are braced to the collar purlin.
