Description

This building on High Street, Redbourn, comprises a house and shop, originally built as an inn. The core of the structure dates back to the 16th century, with a substantial rebuilding of the front in the 18th century. The front facade is constructed of brown brick with red brick detailing and gauged brick lintels. It has a plain tile roof, a plastered floor band, and wooden eaves. The building is two storeys high, with six 20th-century flush sash windows set within the original openings. A 20th-century door frame is located on the left-hand side, centre. The northernmost window sits above a broad, segmental-headed coach entrance that reveals 16th-century ceiling and wall timbers. Inside, the walls and ceilings display exposed timber framing. The rear features an 18th-century hipped roof projection and a long former stable range dating from the 17th to 18th centuries. This range, now used as a shop, has painted brick and timber-frame construction.
