Description
Nos 10 and 12 St Margaret's Green is a large 17th century timber-framed and plastered house, possibly originating from the 16th century, with features from the 18th century. It was formerly known as the Old Manor House and later St Margaret's House. Margaret Catchpole, the adventuress who lived from 1773 to 1841, was a servant to the Cobbold family here at the end of the 18th century. The house has two large jettied gables at the front, with a gabled dormer situated between them, and the upper storey is jettied across the entire front. It has two storeys, attics, and cellars. The building features a seven-window range with double-hung sashes that have glazing bars, except for two windows on the first storey at the south end, which are in flush cased frames. The attics are illuminated by windows in the gables. The ground storey includes a 20th century brick porch designed in a 16th century style. The roofs are tiled. Nos 10 and 12 are part of a group that includes Nos 26 to 30 (even), Nos 21 and 23, the Church of St Margaret, and Nos 2 to 6 (even) Bolton Lane.
