Description
The Martyrs' Memorial is a Protestant memorial located in Christchurch Park, Ipswich, built in 1903 by H.G. Edwards. It is constructed from stone, marble, and has a brick core, set on a 20th-century concrete stepped plinth that is surrounded by low wrought- and cast-iron railings. The stone base of the monument is square with extruded corners beneath a moulded cornice. Inscriptions on the sides of the base include a dedication on the west side that reads: "This Monument is erected to the memory of nine Ipswich Martyrs who for their constancy to the Protestant faith suffered death by burning." The memorial features a quatrefoil-section marble shaft with an annulated ring that rises to a heavy cornice and culminates in a polygonal finial designed in a Gothic style, complete with gablets.
