Description
The World War I and II Memorial, located in Christchurch Park, Ipswich, was built between 1922 and 1923 by E Adams, with later adaptations to include the Second World War. The memorial is constructed of stone over a brick core and is set on a raised platform with a rectangular shape. The plinth features a splayed step that leads up to a short rectangular obelisk with rolled edges.
The base of the memorial includes wreaths on the north and south sides, a commemorative bronze plaque on the west side, and a bronze casting on pedestals to the east. The bronze casting depicts a bundle of military emblems and artefacts wrapped in a flag, which includes items such as bandoliers of ammunition, a Mk. II Browning machine gun, a Vickers gas-operated light machine gun, spears, a mace, and other regalia. Atop the bundle are a soldier's personal effects, including a uniform, helmet, gas mask, water bottle, camouflage webbing, and a satchel filled with Mills bombs.
To the north-west, there is a later stone-faced wall with bronze plaques listing the names of the fallen. A bronze lamp with the Eternal Flame sits atop this wall.
