Description

St Joseph's College, formerly known as Birkfield, is an early 19th-century house that has been stuccoed and features significant 20th-century school extensions to the west and at the rear, along with additional school buildings in the grounds. The building stands two storeys high.

On the south-west front, the first storey has five double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, set in moulded and shouldered architraves. The centre window is slightly recessed and flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters, with a frieze and cornice above. The ground storey features two groups of three double-hung sash windows without glazing bars, complemented by pilaster treatment and a cornice. A central portico projects from the front, supported by fluted Doric columns in antis.

The south-east front has a nine-window range of double-hung sashes with glazing bars, arranged in plain reveals. The ground storey includes French casements, with the central section, consisting of three windows, projecting forward and topped with a balustraded parapet. A verandah, supported by ornamental cast iron, extends across the entire front of the building. The roof is low-pitched, covered in slate, and features wide overhanging eaves supported by paired modillions.
