Description

Moat Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with an early 18th-century dairy range to the left. It is timber framed and plastered, with the facade covered in late 18th or early 19th-century colourwashed brick, and features a pantiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a three-cell main range. There are three windows, which are late 18th or early 19th-century three-light mullion and transom casements set under flat brick arches. The right-hand gable end has two original ovolo-moulded mullioned windows, and the rear shows evidence of two further blocked windows inside, along with signs of others.

The entrance is a lobby with a colourwashed brick gabled porch and a 19th-century six-panel door, where the upper two panels are glazed, located on the left side. The right-hand gable end features wallplate ends supported on carved console brackets. Inside, the farmhouse has good exposed framing. The main beams in the hall and parlour are decorated with multiple roll-moulding, and the hall also has moulded joists. There is a plank and muntin screen in the hall, which has been moved from its original position and now bisects an original window. Both the parlour and the room above contain arched brick fireplaces with stone quoins; above the parlour fireplace are five medieval terracotta tiles, inserted in the 20th century, likely from a church, possibly St. Peter's in Linstead Magna. The farmhouse features a good newel staircase and some original doors, including a notable former exterior door leading into the dairy range.
