Description
Linstead Farmhouse is a large and complex farmhouse, primarily dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, built in three or more phases and extensively restored around 1935. The earlier part features a main range with a slightly projecting cross wing on the right side, and to the right of the cross wing, but set further back, is a later, slightly taller range. The building is timber framed, mainly plastered, with exposed framing in the cross wing above the ground floor. It has a plain tiled roof, except for the rear slope of the later range, which is pantiled. The farmhouse has two storeys with attics in the later range.
There are various windows, mostly from the 19th and 20th centuries; the left-hand range has original mullioned windows at the first floor level, and there are additional original mullioned windows at the rear of the right-hand range. The cross wing features a 20th-century plank door. The left-hand range has a prominent inserted stack positioned forward of the roof ridge, with a small circular axial stack behind it, and further stacks at the gable ends. Inside, there is some good exposed timbering, although it has been significantly modernised. Notably, there are roll-moulded joists said to have been brought from the now-demolished parish church in the 1930s. The later range retains its newel stairs.
