Description
The Old Thatched Cottage is a house that dates back to around 1500 for the northern section and was expanded in the late 17th century for the southern part. It underwent restoration and extension to the rear in the mid-20th century. The cottage features a timber frame with plaster and some areas of colourwashed brick, topped with a thatched roof. It has one and a half storeys and is designed in a three-cell form.
The front has two 4-light windows from the 19th century and a reconstructed early mullioned window, while the rear boasts a 5-light mullioned window from around 1500. There are mid-20th century entrance doors and a gabled dormer at the back. Inside, the cottage showcases exposed framing and a newel staircase from the 16th to 17th centuries. The older section had its flooring added in the late 16th century, and later, two cruck-like members were introduced at the first floor to raise the ceiling. The roof structure above the earlier part shows signs of being smoke-blackened.
