Description
Cratfield Hall is a farmhouse with a rear range dating from the 16th century or earlier, which was extended in the 18th century. The front range is from the 17th century and was built in two phases, featuring an early 19th-century facade. The building has an L-shaped plan and is timber framed with plaster, while the main facade is designed to imitate ashlar. The north side of the rear wing has exposed framing, and the roof is covered with modern plain tiles.
The farmhouse stands two storeys high with attics in the front range and has four windows, which are a mix of two-light and three-light mullion and transom casements. The entrance features a 19th-century panelled door with a plain semi-circular fanlight above, supported by a hoodmould and fluted pilasters. At the rear of the front range, there is a 17th-century ovolo-moulded door frame that includes a rectangular fanlight; the door is from the 19th century, and the fanlight has been filled with a later window made of square-leaded glass. The roof is hipped.
Inside, the earlier part of the front range has a substantial internal stack, while the later section has a smaller internal stack. The interior has been somewhat altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Notable features in the front range include ovolo-moulded floorbeams with barred stops, and one floorbeam at the left end has an indented triangle with a Fleur-de-lys motif carved on the soffit at both ends. The earlier section also showcases good exposed framing at the first-floor level, along with some original doors and floorboarding. The first floor of the rear range also has exposed framing.
