Description

Brook Cottage is a house that dates from the late 17th century, with extensions made around 1740, further alterations in the late 18th century, and additional changes in the late 19th century. The building is primarily timber-framed, with brick additions, and features a machine tile roof at the front and a pantile roof at the rear. The original house has a left of centre ridge stack, while the extension has a tall ridge stack.

The exterior is two stories high with a four-window entrance front and a lower two-story extension to the right. The original front includes a right of centre door made up of six fielded panels with glazed upper panels. The windows are 19th-century, two-light casements that sit under hoodmoulds with label stops, though the left-hand window on the first floor is blind. At the rear, there are two extensions, one of which has a bay window. A section of wattle and daub under glass is exposed as a feature in the main wall. The left return features a four-over-eight sash window with a king mullion and hoodmould.

Inside, the extension reveals exposed timber framing and a large central fireplace, with the principal studs of the frame being chamfered. On the first floor, there is a room that contains a blocked 17th-century three-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window. The roof consists of two tiers of butt purlins and collars.
