Description
Smugglers Steps is a house dating from the late 17th century. It is a two-bay timber-framed building with 18th-century one-bay extensions at either end, along with 19th-century extensions on the right side and some 20th-century alterations. The exterior was refronted in the 18th century with painted brick in English bond. The roof is newly tiled, featuring an off-central 17th-century stack on the left side and a right-side 18th-century chimneystack. The house is 1½ storeys high with five windows. The attic includes two gabled dormers with 20th-century casements. There is one ground floor window to the right of the doorcase that has an original cambered arch. A mid-20th-century gabled brick porch is present, and to the right is a 19th-century one-storey extension made of flint and brick, which is now painted. The rear has an 18th-century catslide roof. Inside, there is a late 17th-century spine beam with a 1½ inch chamfer and an elaborate stop. The open fireplace features two spice alcoves and openings for a bread oven. On the opposite side of the fireplace, there is a narrow cupboard with a ribbed stone top. The first floor's rear wall has jowled posts with diagonal braces at the midrail. The roof includes a collar beam and rafters, and there is a 17th-century three-plank door on pintle hinges.
