Description

This barn, located immediately to the east of Church Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century and the 17th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof. The barn consists of five bays, with the eastern bay being the oldest section, which originally served as the storied end of a barn or stable with a hayloft above.

The structure features full height studs that support the former upper floor, which are morticed into the main posts and pegged at middle rail height. Cranked braces are present, along with a housing for a main beam in the central post of the gable wall. Each side wall has housings for two short six-light diamond-mullioned windows at the upper part. The roof in the first two bays is supported by butt purlins and cranked windbraces.

The remaining four bays also have full height studs, with long steeply-arched braces halved against them, and later primary braces that are nailed on. The roof bays align with the wall bays, featuring clasped purlins and straight windbraces. The collars have been replaced, and there are later queen struts. The arched braces of the tie-beams have been replaced with bolted knees. Access to the barn is through the middle bay, which has a slightly later full height porch on the south side. This barn is included for its group value.
