4/42 Barn immediately to the - east of Church Farmhouse

Barn. Part late C16, part C17. Timber-framed and weatherboarded; corrugated asbestos roof. 5 bays. The eastern bay is the earliest part, formerly the storied end of a barn/stable with hayloft above. Full height studs, with a clamp, to support the former upper floor,morticed into the sides of the main posts and pegged against the sides at middle rail height. Cranked braces. The housing for a main beam in the central post of the gable wall. On the upper part of each side wall the housings for 2 short 6-light diamond- mullioned windows. Butt purlin roof in 2 bays; cranked windbraces. The remaining 4 bays also have full height studs with long steeply-arched braces halved against them, and later primary braces nailed on. The roof bays correspond to wall bays: clasped purlins and straight windbraces; the collars have been replaced, and there are later queen struts. The arched braces of the tie-beams have been replaced by bolted knees. Entry into the middle bay, with a slightly later full height porch on the south side. Included for group value.
