Description
The Church Cottages are a house, originally divided into two cottages, dating from the late 16th century with later additions in the 17th century. The building has one-and-a-half storeys and a two-cell layout, with extensions to the north. It is timber-framed and plastered with clay pantiles, with the frame discernible in four bays, and a fifth bay added later. The building has an internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft that has been rebuilt. The front windows are plain, modern casements. A modern porch with a shallow-pitched roof has been added, along with a sunporch on its south side.
The interior shows significant variation in the framing, along with considerable 20th-century repair work and replacements. The two bays south of the chimney stack are the oldest parts of the building; on the ground floor, an exposed timber ceiling features wide, flat, unchamfered joists, and a main beam with curved, slightly stepped stops. A large, plain fireplace lintel is also present. Upstairs, a former open truss now has a later studded partition wall and a cambered tie-beam supported by arched braces. The roof is inaccessible, but the tie-beam shows peg-holes indicating it once supported queen-posts. One upper fireplace has a plain lintel, and a newel stair is located near the chimney stack. To the north of the stack, the ceiling timbers have been replaced, and the framing is of a later date.
