Description

School Cottage is a house that has been divided into two cottages, dating from the mid to late 16th century. It is two storeys high with attics and has a basic two-cell lobby-entrance plan. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof. The internal chimney stack features a plain rebuilt red brick shaft.

Each storey has two old three-light small-paned casement windows, with one upper window having diamond leading to the two outer lights. There is also a small single-light window on the upper floor above the former porch. The original lobby-entrance doorway has been blocked; currently, one entry leads into a small lean-to porch on the left, which is rendered and has clay pantiles and a plank door. The entrance to the right-hand cottage is located in the side wall.

Inside, to the left of the chimney stack, the two-bay ground floor room has a low exposed timber ceiling with wide plain joists set flat and a large main beam that features a chamfer and stepped curved stops. The timber lintel of the open fireplace has ovolo moulding on the soffit. A timber partition, which includes primary braces and bisected studs, divides part of the area to form a kitchen and was likely added in the early 19th century when the house was converted into cottages. The ground floor of the right-hand cottage exhibits similar timbering.
