Description
This is a 17th-century barn with a later 18th-century wing and minor 20th-century additions and alterations. It is timber-framed with wattle and daub infill, some weatherboarding, and rendered sections, covered by a pitched corrugated iron roof. The barn has a five-bay layout, including a porch to the north, and a three-bay wing extending perpendicular to the west. There are later outshuts to the north and south.
Inside, the east end features jowelled posts, pegged rafters, and long curved braces. The fourth bay from the east has a collar purlin to crown posts, the western one buttressed with a later post, supporting mostly complete collars, with curved braces still in place. Tie beams are set with curved braces to wall posts. Two scarf joints are visible in the south wall plate. Remnants of wattle and daub infill remain in several bays. One westernmost tie beam has unused stud mortices, suggesting the presence of an original end wall. The three-bay addition at the west end has a ridge board, bolted knees, and carved joweled posts.
The barn has group value with the nearby 17th-century Belsteads Farmhouse, with which the barn’s core is likely contemporary. The survival of a mostly complete bay of crown post roof and other features makes the barn worthy of separate recognition.
