Description
The Knodishall War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1919, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of polished granite and is located in the churchyard near the Church of St Lawrence, which is a Grade II* listed building.
The memorial features a polished granite obelisk that stands approximately 2.4 meters high, set on a square plinth with a two-stepped square base. The main inscription is incised and painted in black on the west face of the plinth, stating: "IN MEMORY OF/ THE BRAVE MEN/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
The names of the fallen soldiers are incised on the south and north faces of the plinth. Additionally, there is an inscription on the upper step of the base that reads: "WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ (4 NAMES)."
