Description
The Church of St Lawrence is a parish church primarily dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, with significant restorations in the 19th century. A vestry was added in 1838. The building is constructed of flint, with some brick repairs, and features a plain tile roof. The west tower, which is from the 15th century, has four stages, diagonal buttresses, and some flushwork decoration on the parapet that includes the arms of the Jenney family.
The original west doorway has a square hood mould and carved shields in the spandrels. There is a blocked 12th-century doorway on the north side of the nave. The south walls of the nave and chancel contain two late 15th or early 16th-century brick windows, while other windows date from the 14th century. A blocked south doorway leads to the nave, and heavy brick buttresses were added to the south wall in 1843. The nave and chancel were re-roofed at a lower level during the 19th century, and the interior has been extensively restored.
Inside, there is an octagonal font from around 1250, supported by a central pillar and eight smaller pillars surrounding it, along with an early 17th-century pulpit. Four traceried panels of the rood screen are now located beneath the tower arch, which also features a cast iron coat of arms of William IV above it. Additionally, there is part of a trefoil-headed piscina in the south sanctuary wall and a brass memorial to John Jenney from 1460 on the north chancel wall.
