Description

The barn immediately east of Brunswick Farmhouse is a Grade II listed structure, likely dating from the early 17th century, with later extensions in the 17th century, a 19th-century midstrey, and late 20th-century repairs. It is timber-framed and clad in weatherboards on a brick plinth, topped with a steeply pitched pantile roof featuring gable ends.

The barn's layout includes three original southern bays, with the central bay serving as the threshing bay. The two northern bays are likely a later 17th-century addition and are built as two storeys. In the 19th century, a midstrey was added to the east front of the threshing bay. Recent alterations include the removal of what were probably 19th-century outshuts from the east side and south end.

The exterior is single storey, except for the two-storey section at the north end. The east side features a gabled midstrey to the left of center, with large double doors for cart access. A similar entrance is located on the west side, to the right of center. During a survey in 1989, some weatherboarding had been removed, revealing the timber frame, which was under repair.

Inside, the walls consist of vertical studding without a midrail, supported by long straight tension braces, with some studding replaced. The jowled wall-posts have arch braces to the tie-beams on either side of the threshing bay, with queen-posts above and arched braces to the collars and square-set clasped purlins. Most common rafters are intact, originally without a ridgepiece, which is a later addition. The north end features a floor supported by a chamfered cross-beam with straight cut stops, and a boarded stud partition wall separates this floored section from the main barn. The threshing floor is paved in stone.
