Description
Windwhistle Cottage is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with 20th-century extensions. It stands at one and a half storeys and is constructed from timber framing with a rendered finish, topped with clay pantiles. The building features an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft, 20th-century two-light casement windows, and two gabled dormers. There is also a 20th-century porch and red brick extensions at the south end.
Inside, the layout has a three-cell lobby-entrance form. The southern end originally had two bays that included a one-bay service room and part of the hall, with remnants of a cross entry. The partition wall between the cross-entry and the service room has been relocated, but it still retains the original doorway with a four-centred arched head. On the upper floor of this section, two tie-beams have been removed, revealing a blocked original five-light window with diamond mullions. The roof features remnants of clasped purlins and windbraces. In the 17th century, a second bay was added to the hall at a slightly different level, with flat-set joists that are chamfered and scroll-stopped. The two further bays to the north include a chimney and a parlour.
