Description
The South Lookout is a lookout tower located in Aldeburgh, built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from rendered and colorwashed brick and features slate roofs. The tower is three stories tall and has a square shape, with single-light casements placed at intervals. On the south side, there is a cast-iron external winder staircase that leads to a plank door on the top floor. The west face has some minor decorative elements, including plaster brackets and aedicules. The east face features a cantilevered viewing gallery on the top floor, which supports a 20th-century glazed porch. The tower is topped with a pyramidal roof that has a weather vane shaped like a wherry. At the base of the tower, there is a single-storey building. The lookout tower was constructed in competition with the North Lookout Tower. The interior has not been inspected.
