Description
Union Baptist Chapel, built in 1822, is a notable structure located on High Street in Aldeburgh. The chapel is constructed of colourwashed brick and features a hipped slate roof. The exterior showcases a two-storey, three-bay front with central double doors that are topped by a six-vaned fanlight. Flanking the doors are fixed windows with 16 panes, each beneath a bottom-hung arched light that echoes the fanlight design. The first floor has three identical windows, and both the north and south sides of the building have three similar windows on the upper level.
Inside, the chapel contains plain benches and an arcaded pulpit at the west end, which includes a cathedra chair beneath a pediment. At the east end, there is a panelled gallery accessed by a winder staircase, which houses a set of benches and a manual Groves organ.
The chapel is further enhanced by its forecourt, which is enclosed by railings that align with the street. These railings consist of a pair of central brick piers and cast-iron elements topped with Greek cross finials, along with a wrought-iron gate of a similar design.
