Description

Post Office Stores and Thimble Cottage is a pair of cottages, with a shop in part of the northern half, dating from the 17th century. The building was altered and extended to create the cottages in the late 18th or early 19th century. It is one storey high with attics, constructed from timber framing and rendered, topped with clay pantiles. An internal chimney stack, featuring a large plain red brick shaft, is positioned between the two cottages.

The exterior includes four gabled dormers with two-light casement windows, three of which have transoms. The ground floor features various windows: a three-light window with transoms for Thimble Cottage, two standard two-light windows from the 20th century, and one four-light shop window with vertical bars for the Post Office Stores. There are two four-panelled half-glazed doors beneath open gabled porches with trellis work and pantiles, along with two later plank doors, one leading to the shop in a small lean-to addition.

Inside, there is evidence of the 17th-century core, likely in a two-cell lobby-entrance form, with remnants of substantial studding, a middle rail, a wallplate, and chamfered principal rafters. The remaining roof components are covered. Sparse later framing has been added to the older structure, featuring primary braces and bisected studs, with ceilings that have joists set on edge. The older frame is mostly visible on the upper floor.
