Description
Greenside Farmhouse is a late 16th-century farmhouse located in South Elmham, St. Margaret. It has two storeys and attics in part, featuring a basic two-cell end-chimney plan with later extensions. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, with some old roughcast on the east gable wall, and is topped with thatch. There is an end chimney-stack on the east, integrated within the frame. All windows are late 20th-century replacements designed in a traditional style, consisting of two-light casements with a single bar.
The interior is arranged in three bays. The principal ground floor room, which spans two bays, has a three-inch chamfer and curved stepped stops on the main beam and matching joists, along with a plain lintel above the open fireplace. On the upper floor, the open truss features a cambered tie-beam and very large arched braces. Empty mortices in the main posts suggest there may have been an older core to the house, and there are remains of diamond-mullioned windows.
An early 19th-century rear extension showcases typical late framing and includes an end chimney-stack made of red brick with a high coping on the gable. The front range of the house has been almost doubled in length by an extension from around 1980, which is designed to match the original style.
