Description
The Old Rectory is an early and later 19th-century farmhouse, originally the rectory, located in South Elmham. The front range is constructed of white brick, while the rear and side ranges use red brick. The roof is shallow-hipped, with a plain wooden eaves cornice and a central triangular pediment. The front facade is arranged in three bays, divided by paired flat pilasters at the corners and on either side of the central bay, which projects slightly. A decorative band runs between the upper and lower windows in the two outer bays. The facade has a three-window range with small-paned sash windows set within cased frames and flat arches, all within deep reveals. The central window above the entrance is surmounted by a flat pediment supported by ornate console brackets. The porch features pilasters and an entablature with egg-and-dart ornament, the original flat roof having been replaced with a slightly domed lead roof. The panelled front door has applied mouldings. Inside, the entrance hall has a groined vaulted plaster ceiling, and a number of fine plaster cornices are present. A brick on the south wall of the rear extensions bears the date and initials "A.S. 1888."
