Description
This barn, dating from the 16th century with later additions, is located approximately 15 metres northeast of Letheringham Old Hall. It is timber framed, covered with clapboarding and corrugated metal, and features a pantile roof. The barn consists of ten bays, with gabled transepts projecting on both the right and left sides, each having double doors. The rear of the barn has adjoining farm buildings that obscure the walling.
Inside, the barn has jowled wall posts (some of which have been replaced), cambered tie beams, queen posts, collars, one pair of purlins, and a ridge beam with wind bracing. Arched braces connect the wall posts to the tie beams. The west end features queen posts with arched braces linking them to the collars, indicating that this end may be older than the eastern end. The walling is middle railed, and there is an inserted granary floor at the east end. The upper walling at the west end has a series of four-light windows in each bay, most of which are now blocked. The transepts were added later than the main structure, and there was once a large central double doorway in the middle of the south face, which has been filled with 18th-century close studding. The attached farm buildings are not included in this listing.
