Description
Black and White Cottages are a pair of estate cottages with a mid-16th century core that were restored and enlarged in the mid to late 19th century in a 16th century style. The building features a central range with projecting cross wings on either side, and the left cross wing has a small lean-to extension. The core is timber framed, and the facade and return fronts display closely-spaced applied half-timbering. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has crest tiles, while the rear of the main range is finished with pantiles. The main range is single storey with an attic, while the cross wings are two storeys with an attic. The gable ends of the cross wings have jettied floors supported by moulded bressummers. The windows are primarily mullion and transom casements with diamond leaded panes. Each cross wing has matching doorways featuring 6-panel doors, with the upper two panels glazed and topped with small gabled hoods. The gables are adorned with ornamental bargeboards, and there are two stacks with grouped hexagonal flues.
