Description
A barn dating to the 17th century, situated near Letheringham on the Wickham Market Road. The barn is timber framed with clapboard facing and wattle-and-daub infill, originally thatched, now covered by a corrugated iron roof. It comprises eight bays with transepts on one side. The south face has a deep brick plinth of Flemish bond, with oak clapboarding to the lower section, and panels of wattle and daub under a cement render. Double doors are located to the right and left, with a double loft door on the far right. A 19th-century brick outshut with a pantile roof is set into the right-hand gable end, with a double door above. The left-hand end is similarly clapboarded. The rear of the barn includes a substantial 19th and 20th-century addition on the right, and a lean-to roof running between the transepts, which are 18th-century additions with gable ends and double doors. Internally, the walls feature close-studded walling and arched braces. Tie beams were originally supported on arched braces, but now have knee joints. Collars are present above, and the roof has wind bracing. A 20th-century floor has been inserted at one end.
