Description
This barn, located about 30 meters north-north-east of the Old Rectory in Creeting St Mary, is likely from the 16th century. It features a weatherboarded timber frame set on a later Flemish bond brick plinth, topped with an interlocking concrete tile hipped roof.
The barn has a five-bay layout with a central threshing bay. A floor has been added in all but the north-east end bay. The southeast front includes large double doors at the center, with smaller doors to the left and right. The northwest elevation facing the road has smaller double doors at the center, a loft doorway above, and a small window to the right, all of which are plank doors.
The interior was only partly accessible during the survey in 1989. The walls consist of slight scantling studding with long straight tension braces and no mid rail. The original braces from the wall-ports to the tie-beams have been replaced with curved timber brackets. The roof structure is visible only at the north-east end, where there is a tall unchamfered crown-post with upward curving axial braces connecting to the collar-purlin and common rafters, which do not have a ridge-piece. The other four crown-posts are believed to still be intact.
