Description
All Saints Hall is a house dating from the mid-16th century, with significant alterations primarily in the early 17th century. It is timber-framed and plastered, featuring 18th-century pargeting with both herringbone and cable patterns on the exterior. The roof is tiled, with some renewal using concrete plain tiles. A prominent axial chimney from the early 17th century is constructed of red brick and has three octagonal shafts on moulded bases. A second, external chimney of orange/buff bricks, partly rebuilt in the 19th century, is also present. Most of the windows are 20th-century casements with transoms, although two original 16th-century windows with chamfered diamond mullions have been restored and re-glazed. A 20th-century panelled entrance door is sheltered by an open gabled porch supported on posts.
The main central range of the house is aligned east-west. This range incorporates a cantilevered gable tie-beam supported by brackets. The timber framing showcases good-quality close-studding and arch wind-bracing. Two blocked doorways at the first floor level retain 4-centred arched heads. The roof is wind-braced with clasped purlins.
There are three 17th-century extensions to the original structure. A parlour block, built around 1600, extends to the south side and exhibits fine timber framing with close-studwork. Within this parlour block, a significant fragment of a contemporary wall painting survives. This painting uses blue and grey pigments to depict figures, stylized foliage, and Classical pilasters. The main portion of the wall painting is on the north wall of the chamber, but a continuing frieze suggests a more extensive original composition.
