Description

Cheddington Manor House is a house dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, which has been altered and extensively repaired over time. It features a timber frame with 18th and 20th century brick infill. The ground floor is partly rebuilt with red and vitreous brick, as well as red brick with blue diaper patterns. The house has moulded bressumers and bargeboards, some of which may be reused from the 16th or 17th century, while others are from the 20th century. It has an old tile roof, and the southwest bay includes a rectangular brick chimney with blue diapers, a moulded base, and an off-set head. The central range has a partly rebuilt chimney with five shafts; the central shaft is octagonal, while the others are round with narrow spiral bands of moulded brick and off-set heads. The windows are 20th century casements with wooden mullions and wrought iron stays. The house has an irregular T-plan, with the northwest range being two storeys tall and the central range running southeast being taller, featuring two storeys and an attic. The northwest front has three bays, with two gabled bays to the right and a central bay that includes a gabled oriel window on the first floor. The southwest front has a projection to the left with a single casement on the ground floor and a chimney to the right. There is a two-storey porch projection to the right at the angle with the central wing, which has a 20th century door in the gabled right side. The central wing consists of two bays, featuring two paired casements on the first floor and a three-light casement on the ground floor to the right. The gable end of this wing has a canted bay window and paired attic casements. There are large 20th century extensions to the northeast.

Inside, the large room in the central wing has a moulded stone fireplace with a Tudor arch, varnished panelling that may date from the 16th or 17th century, and chamfered cross beams with double carved stops. The room above has similar cross beams and an arched fireplace with a pulvinated frieze and curved cornice. A winder stair aligns with the main chimney. The southwest bay includes a ground floor room with an arched fireplace and 18th century panelling, while the upper room has a fireplace with moulded brick jambs and a stone lintel.
