Description

Marles Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 16th century, with substantial alterations made in the late 18th century. It is timber-framed and plastered, with a later 18th century range built of stock brick to the south. The roof is covered in red plain tiles. The house has two storeys, a cellar, and attics. The south front has a three-window range of vertical sliding sash windows with glazing bars, topped by a central pediment. The west side features three small gabled wings, the wing to the north being the original staircase tower. Internally, original timber framing remains, including jowled storey posts and stop-chamfered bridging joists, along with some evidence of original 16th century mullion window positions. The cellar dates back to the 16th century and was partly refaced in the 18th century. A 16th century red brick chimney stack is also present. Significant 18th and early 19th century detailing survives, encompassing doors, architraves, and moulded arcading with pilasters and moulded capitals. The roof comprises both 16th and later side purlin construction.
