Description

Two houses, originally built as one dwelling in the late 16th century, with a probable earlier core and alterations around 1700. The buildings are two storeys high and were originally arranged with a three-cell plan, including a cross-entry layout. The construction is timber-framed and plastered, although number 8 has a rough-cast render. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and there is a central chimney built of red brick. Windows include a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements, two 18th-century windows with iron casements, and a single 17th-century window with an ovolo-moulded mullion. Number 8 has a 19th-century six-panelled door, while number 6 has a 20th-century two-panelled door set within an open porch on brick piers. Number 8 comprises the hall and parlour, retaining good late 16th-century features such as chamfered ceiling joists, an arched doorway in the hall, open fireplaces in the hall, parlour, and one chamber, and an original newel staircase. A single-storey wing was added to the front around 1700. The service cell to the left, now part of number 6, has a lower roof line and may be of even earlier date. The buildings were formerly known as the Buck’s Head Inn until the mid-20th century.
