Two houses. C17, encased in brick in C19; altered and converted in mid C20 with replacement doors and windows. Timber-framed, clad in rendered and whitewashed brick: roof of black-glazed pantiles with brick stacks to left of centre and right end. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and dormer attic: irregular 7-window range. No.21 has half-glazed door to left of canted bay window fitted with top-hung casements: one 6/6 and one 8/8 unhorned sash to first floor within flush frames. No.23 has centre of ground floor cut back to form recessed entrance porch and early C20 glazed door within. To right, canted bay window fitted with top-hung casements: to left of door, 2 casements, and 5 similar casements to first floor, of varying dimensions. Dentilled eaves cornice. One small gabled dormer to right of centre with casement. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: the house is associated with Thomas Gardner (1690-1769), historian of Southwold and Dunwich (1754).
