Description
Red House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 16th century and the early 19th century, with a layout in the shape of a "L". The rear of the farmhouse is a timber-framed structure from the early 16th century, which was later encased in 19th-century red brick. The front of the farmhouse is a two-storey red brick structure and has plain gables and two end chimney stacks. The brickwork on the front is laid in a Flemish bond pattern. The roof is covered with black glazed pantiles. The front of the house has a timber dentil cornice and a three-window front with three-light mullion-and-transome casement windows with segmental arched heads to the frames and surrounds. A two-light window in the same style replaces the original central entrance door on the ground floor. The rear range has an internal chimney stack with a plain shaft of Tudor red brick, corbelled at the head. There are two gabled and weatherboarded dormers with two-light casement windows, and the remaining windows are three-light Edwardian casement windows in a mullion-and-transome style. A half-glazed door is set under a 20th-century open gabled porch.
The farmhouse has a three-cell plan and exposed timbers inside. In the two central bays to the right of the chimney stack, there are heavy, flat-set joists with chamfer and run-off stops, a chamfered main beam with curved stops and a bar. The fireplace has a plain lintel. An old panelled screen was removed and destroyed during a recent restoration. The end wall of the timber frame was cut away where it meets the 19th-century front. Both side walls have been raised, with the roof now higher on the south side than on the north. The roof structure is concealed. The house appears to have been designed as a two-story building from the beginning.
