Description

Hawthorn Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century. It has two storeys and attics, built on a three-cell plan. The structure is timber-framed and encased in 18th-century red brick, topped with clay pantiles. There is an end chimney stack on the left, set within the gable, and an internal stack, both featuring similar square shafts and plain bands. The windows are 20th-century casements in a traditional style, with two-light and three-light configurations. The farmhouse has an enclosed, gabled red brick porch with a clay pantiled roof.

Inside, the layout consists of five bays with exposed ceiling beams. The ground-floor rooms on either side of the internal stack have plain unchamfered joists set flat and a chamfered main beam with step stops. The upper ceilings are a later addition, with joists set on edge. The roof features two rows of stepped butt purlins, which are trimmed at their junction with the deep, narrow principal rafters. The cambered collars are halved against the principals using barefaced dovetail halvings, and there is a ridge-piece. Overall, the roof appears to be a later addition, likely installed when the upper ceilings were added.
